‘Walking For Eileen’ Raises £20k for Monthly Alzheimer’s Support Evenings

A WALKING Group that has raised more than £20,000 to support people with Alzheimer’s in Cannock Chase is hoping this year will see even more people take part.
First organised by Bob Pitcher in 2017, following the death of his wife Eileen, the annual event will mark its eight-year anniversary at the end of August.
And over the years, generous attendees have helped raise more than £21,000 for local group MASE – Monthly Alzheimer’s Support Evenings.
The first ‘Walking for Eileen’ event was on 2nd September 2017, which coincidentally would have been Bob and Eileen’s 45th wedding anniversary.
Bob said: “I regularly took her to a local support group MASE. It provided invaluable support not only to Eileen but also to me, offering strength and companionship during a challenging time. Following Eileen’s passing, I felt compelled to give back and became a volunteer myself.
“At MASE, every volunteer has personal experience as a former caregiver or professional in the caregiving field. When you sponsor me or any of our fellow walkers, rest assured that MASE operates solely through unpaid volunteers.
“This means every donation directly supports individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. I know from first-hand experience the tremendous work done by MASE. Every penny of every pound that you give will be used to benefit those in need.”
The 83-year-old added: “I’ve witnessed the pain Alzheimer’s causes, but I’ve also witnessed the solace that an evening at MASE provides, both for those with Alzheimer’s and for their dedicated caregivers.”
The event is supported by the Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles (IHL) Chase Fit programme which encourages everyone to get active outdoors through walking, cycling, running and gardening.
Guy Etchells, Outdoor Coordinator for IHL, said: “Bob is an inspiration to everyone who knows him. He joined the programme after Eileen’s passing because he found walking in nature calming and, like many people, our walking sessions are a great way to socialise, reducing isolation and loneliness.
‘Walking for Eileen’ has raised an incredible amount for a very good cause, and we’d encourage everyone to come down to this year’s event and enjoy a lovely walk around the Chase and raise some much-needed funds at the same time.”
If you’d like to take part in this year’s ‘Walking for Eileen’ simply meet at 12 noon, Saturday 31st August, Marquis Drive, Cannock Chase. There will be a six mile, and one mile walk to cater to all abilities. There’s also a pre-walk warm up session at 11:40 with fitness instructor Colin.
You can donate on the day (although there is no obligation to donate) or, why not, get sponsored by friends and family!
